Simple answers to driving on new concrete, preventing surface cracks, and choosing the right mix strength.
While you can safely walk on the fresh surface after just 24 hours without leaving footprints, heavy vehicles are a completely different story. It takes time for the internal chemical mix to harden properly. Driving a car or parking on it too early will stress the inside of the slab, causing deep structural cracks before the concrete ever gets a chance to reach its full design strength.
As freshly poured concrete dries out, it naturally shrinks and wants to crack. If we left it as one massive, continuous piece, it would develop ugly, jagged zig-zag cracks right across the middle of your property. By using a specialized diamond saw to cut clean, shallow lines across the slab, we create deliberate weak points. When the concrete shrinks, it cracks neatly inside the bottom of those hidden cuts where nobody can see it.
Yes. Raw concrete acts just like a hard sponge—it is full of tiny microscopic pores that easily soak up liquids. If you leave it completely unsealed, everyday drops like car oil, dark tyre marks, and winter rainwater will sink deep into the surface, causing permanent stains or surface flaking. A high-quality sealer acts like an invisible raincoat, keeping the liquids pooled safely on top so they can be washed right away.
The letters "MPa" are simply the standard unit used to measure how much crushing weight a concrete slab can support. Standard backyard paths usually use a weaker 20MPa or 25MPa mix. For high-use areas like main driveways, we upgrade to a premium 32MPa structural blend. This denser, high-grade mix has extra strength built-in, making it far more resistant to heavy vehicle traffic, bad weather, and surface wear.
The client required a high-load capacity driveway for heavy vehicle access and a matching side slab for a future workshop. The primary concern was preventing Subgrade Settlement and ensuring the finish matched the modern architectural aesthetic of the home without future cracking or drainage issues.
We engineered a dual-layer sub-base system with high-compaction road base to eliminate soil movement. The pour utilized SL82 Steel Mesh and N12 starter bars tied into the existing footings. We applied a bespoke Charcoal Oxide color through the mix for a permanent, fade-resistant architectural finish.
| WORK ITEM | TOTAL INVESTMENT |
|---|---|
| Excavation & Soil Disposal | $3,850.00 |
| Formwork & Steel Mesh Reinforcement | $4,200.00 |
| 32MPa Concrete Supply & Pumping | $8,400.00 |
| Placement, Finishing & Curing | $5,100.00 |
| Saw Cut Joints & Protective Seal | $2,200.00 |
| FINAL PROJECT TOTAL | $23,750.00 |
The result is a seamless, high-performance concrete asset that adds significant valuation to the property. By utilizing 32MPa strength and proactive saw-cutting, we have mitigated the risk of shrinkage cracks. The surface is now fully sealed against oil stains and weather erosion, ensuring a maintenance-free finish for years to come.
